What You'll Get to Do: Emergency Dispatcher

Location: Beaufort, SC (Start Date: Immediate)  

As a Vancro Emergency Dispatcher for the US Marine Corps Beaufort, SC, you'll need the following knowledge, skills and abilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Plays a major role in helping to safeguard the installation and its vital equipment, sensitive areas and critical assets. Requires a self-motivated individual with the ability to multi-task and stay focused while coordinating and handling communication tasks using several radio frequencies, telephone, and computer equipment. Additionally, the incumbent must be able to function independently, possess excellent organizational and attention to detail skills; properly manage stress and exhibit excellent customer service skills. This position may include working with armed members of the law enforcement profession.

The SSP Emergency Dispatcher:

1. Call-taking and Dispatch:

Serves as initial point of telephone contact for the public, government officials and outside agencies seeking emergency/non-emergency fire/police/medical services.

Handles a high volume of telephone calls; conducts an initial screening to analyze the situation, determining if the request is emergent or non-emergent in nature.

Records prescribed information for call back/identification purposes; determines priority of response and surveys the area where the services are required for available responding units, and maintains records of all service calls.

Allocates the number of units required to respond based on the nature of the call, dispatches the units to the area via radio and relays pertinent information to the responding units.

Ensures updated information is received and disseminated as it becomes available, provides information to responding personnel, notifies organizations and agencies as determined appropriate, initiates move-ups, coverage, and mutual aid requests for assistance.

Monitors the activity of field personnel and assists the on-site supervisors in coordinating adequate response to incidents in progress. (E)
Calmly controls the reporting parties in time of anxiety, fear and panic, providing vital pre-arrival instructions, which could mean the difference between life and death.

Assists law enforcement officers (MPs, NCIS, CID, JAG, etc.), with a variety of information that is available from the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), such as vehicle registrations, license plate verification, previous encounters involving individuals, etc.

 

2. Alarm Monitoring: (Incumbent may be responsible for this task depending on location)

Monitors closed circuit television (CCTV) screens trained on sensitive areas/critical assets for a variety of security reasons.

Analyzes images displayed of an authorized or unauthorized presence within the range of the CCTV camera while monitoring CCTV screens.

Immediately supplies information to the proper agency, i.e., Police/Medical/Fire of unauthorized activity/activation based on images displayed on CCTV and dispatches proper units to the scene.

Monitors and/or operates electronic security systems involving numerous alarm panels/monitors, call-boxes, maintenance-related items, intrusion detection systems, video motion detection systems, and various security alarms.

Sets and/or resets alarms activated to ensure alarm was not a malfunction. Instantaneously supplies information to the proper activity of the alarm activation and dispatches proper units to the location.

Ensures all communication and alarm systems are in proper working order. When found defective, initiates immediate corrective action, ensuring that PMO/MCPD operations are not affected.

 

3. Administrative:

Prepares and maintains a properly documented communications log of all incoming telephone calls and incoming/outgoing radio transmissions. 

Prepares and maintains a properly documented alarm control log of all alarm conditions to include setting, activation, deactivation and other pertinent alarm information.

Prepares and maintains running logs of major events listing all pertinent information to include proper notification of higher authorities and/or outside agencies.

Maintains manpower status report and keeps an accurate log for utilization.

Ensures recall rosters on key personnel from the necessary units are accurate.

 

4. Operates a variety of software application programs, including word processing and/or spreadsheet programs and prepares a variety of documents (such as correspondence, memoranda, reports, papers, charts, statistical tables, messages and other documents) requiring accuracy in spelling and grammar.

 

5. Operates a variety of office automation equipment, including copy machines, facsimile machines, networked computers, laser printers, shredders, scanners, and other electronic equipment. (E)

 

6. Assists PMO/MCPD administrative and operational personnel as required; and performs additional duties and responsibilities as directed in the installation SOP and the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Manual.

 

7. May be required to perform alarm monitor duties, as necessary (see separate position description for information regarding the specifics of this position), and may perform other job related duties and tasks as directed.

 

8. Maintains a neat and professional appearance and demeanor and conducts oneself in a manner that promotes a positive image of the Marine Corps, the PMO/MCPD.

Minimum Qualifications:

This position requires a high level of trust and confidence and as such the applicant must meet several pre-employment requirements.

1. Must be a U.S. citizen.
2. Must successfully pass initial drug screening and periodic follow-up testing.
3. Must possess or be able to obtain, if necessary, a "secret" security clearance.
4. Must successfully complete a background check.
5. Must possess a valid driver's license.
6. Must possess a minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
7. Must successfully complete a National Agency Check with Written Inquiries (NACI).
8. One year experience/knowledge working in a security/police environment is desired.
9. May be required to successfully pass a psychological evaluation (only if armed).
10. Must be Lautenberg compliant if armed.
11. Must have 20/20 correctable vision in each eye.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Ability to multi-task, pay close attention to detail, stay alert and focused, and coordinate and manage emergency communication equipment.

2. Ability to qualify and maintain annual proficiency with assigned weapon (only if armed).

3. Ability to use computer software applications including, but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, Power-Point, databases and e-mail.

4. Possess excellent organizational and file management skills and the ability to plan and execute administrative work with little or no supervision.

5. Possess excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to speak English clearly and succinctly.

6. Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.

7. Possess excellent typing abilities and the skill to prepare documents accurately with minimal errors.

8. Ability to work (mission essential) regardless of weather conditions, Force Protection Condition, or installation closure and to report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled time; work rotating shifts, work overtime on an emergency basis and other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays and may be recalled to duty.

9. Ability to professionally interact with customers, colleagues and command members at all levels; and to foster positive business relationships.

10. Ability to learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation or through on- the-job training.

11. Ability to maintain sensitive files and documents and maintain a high level of confidentiality.

Physical Requirements:

Hearing and speaking in English to exchange information, detect alarm signals and monitor telephone and emergency radio communications; seeing to read, prepare and proofread documents and to observe CCTV screens; sitting for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, CCTV joysticks, and alarm signal equipment; bending, reaching overhead, above the shoulders
and horizontally, and performing shift work, including nighttime.

Travel:

May be required to travel to and attend formal dispatcher training for as long as three (3) weeks in order to obtain state certification.
